Understanding Glass
- What is the difference between annealed and tempered glass?
- Annealed glass is standard glass that breaks into large, sharp shards. Tempered glass is heat-treated to be roughly four times stronger and, when it does break, it shatters into small, relatively harmless pieces. Tempered glass is required for safety glazing applications.
- Do I need tempered (safety) glass for my project?
- Building codes generally require safety glazing in shower and bath enclosures, entry and patio doors, glass railings, large or low windows near the floor, and glass table tops. We will advise where tempered glass is required for your specific project.
- What is Low-E glass?
- Low-E (low-emissivity) glass has a microscopically thin coating that reflects infrared heat while letting visible light through. It improves year-round energy efficiency by keeping heat out in summer and in during winter.
- What is an insulated glass unit (IGU)?
- An insulated glass unit is two or more panes of glass separated by a sealed air or argon-filled space. The sealed gap is the gold standard for thermal performance and noise reduction in windows and storefronts.
- What is the difference between framed, semi-frameless, and frameless shower doors?
- Framed shower doors have metal framing around all edges and use thinner glass. Semi-frameless doors reduce the framing for a cleaner look. Frameless shower doors use thick tempered glass with minimal hardware for a high-end, open appearance.
